Should Costco be allowed to expand its corporate headquarters? That’s the question that will soon be posed to Issaquah’s citizens.
The city of Issaquah has scheduled a public hearing during its Monday City Council meeting on a potential agreement with the warehouse wholesaler to expand its Central Issaquah headquarters in exchange for partnership on future city street improvements. The final agenda for the meeting was approved Friday, after press time.
Costco has occupied 700,000 square feet of Pickering Place since 1994. It was permitted under the limitations of the 1987 Pickering Place Master Plan, which limits building heights and the square footage of commercial development. The 2012 Central Issaquah Plan has since modified those plans for an urbanized core, though Costco remains under the Pickering plan.
Under a July 7 draft agreement between the city and Costco, the corporation would have the right to develop its property with up to 1.5 million square feet of additional development.
To do so, the agreement would replace the standing Pickering plan with a new 30-year development agreement. The existing headquarters buildings would remain in “substantially the same footprint” and limited in expansion to half their current square footage — and possibly more, as long as development is consistent with the Central Issaquah Development and Design Standards. Two new skybridges would also be allowed.
The Issaquah City Council meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sept. 15.
