While last weekend’s rain dampened the Skyline High School fields, it didn’t dampen the spirits of Relay for Life volunteers, who raised $230,000 this year.
The about 860 participants walked around the school’s track through the night, said Aimee Martin with community relations. “It was evident to me that everyone was there to support a world with less cancer and more birthdays, regardless of the weather.”
A cut-a-thon, where women donate locks of hair for wigs, took 19 donations, and an on-site silent auction raised $3,700.
The event didn’t come without somber moments. Luminaries, candles inside paper bags, were dedicated to cancer survivors and to those who lost their battle. They lined the track at night.
Cancer survivors also took a ceremonial first lap around the track.
The top fundraising adult was Brent Johnson, who brought in about $29,000, and the top fundraising youth was Issaquah High School’s Michael Cecil, who raised about $7,000.
The group’s goal was to raise $252,000 this year, and fundraising continues through July.
“It’s great to see how much a community can rally around one common cause and make a huge difference in the fight against cancer,” Martin said.
