The tagline (and Twitter hashtag) for Salmon Days 2015 was #SoFlippinFun. Now an association of Washington state event organizers has decided the festival was the most flippin’ fun of them all.
On Tuesday, the Washington Festivals and Events Association awarded Salmon Days with the Grand Summit Award for an event budgeted over $75,000. The award, given to the event deemed best overall by judges, was presented during the Association’s annual conference in Olympia.
The Grand Summit Award was one of nine awards given to Greater Issaquah Chamber of Commerce events.
Salmon Days 2015 was up against events like Bumbershoot, Seafair and the Bite of Seattle.
“[The WFEA] a great industry organization and to be compared with your contemporaries so favorably is a great thing,” said Robin Kelley, the Chamber’s director of festivals and community engagement.
Awards are a boon for festivals, Kelley said, a trophy organizers can bring to potential sponsors, volunteers and host cities to grow events even larger. Two days before the awards were announced, Kelley gave a seminar at the WFEA conference teaching event organizers how to leverage their awards for just that purpose.
“We [organizers] are kind of the skeleton, but these events are really filled in by the volunteers and sponsors and boards that dedicate their time and money to us,” she said.
Salmon Days took home a total of six awards in the Over $75,000 budget category. In addition to the Grand Summit Award, the festival won a Gold Award for Best Website and Silver Awards for Community Impact, Other Merchandise, Best Media/TV/Radio and Best Social Media Campaign.
Beat the Winter Brews Fest took home an Under $75,000 Silver Award for Best Social Media and a Bronze Award for Other Merchandise.
Issaquah’s Down Home 4th and Heritage Day won an Under $75,000 Gold Award for Best Event Photograph.
