The Sammamish campus for a Seattle-area megachurch has survived a round of closures following declining donations and an upheaval in church leadership.

Mars Hill Church in Sammamish is among the 12 locations staying open as the Seattle-based megachurch announced the closure of two churches in Seattle, a third in Phoenix, Ariz., and the canceling of expansion plans in California.

Mars Hill Church, founded 1996 in Seattle by Mark Driscoll, Lief Moi and Mike Gunn, encompasses 15 location in five states. Parishioners attending the two closing Seattle locations will be directed to attend services in Ballard, according to a statement issued Sunday, Sept. 7.

Officials from Mars Hill, both at the Sammamish location and church headquarters, did not respond to interview requests from the Reporter.

Attendance and donations for Mars Hill are down in 2014 following a series of controversies involving church leadership, with pastors questioning Driscoll’s leadership and transparency. Driscoll is currently on a self-imposed sabbatical from church activities.

Mars Hill also announced up to 40 percent of church staff will be cut in the near future.
