A 3-month-old Sammamish infant was killed and four Sammamish residents were injured in a fiery auto accident Feb. 24 in California.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the group of five was traveling southbound on Interstate 5, just north of Tustin Ranch Road in Tustin, California.
At approximately 11:22 p.m., their Dodge Caravan struck unknown debris in the road. After noticing flames coming from the vehicle’s left rear side, the 30-year-old male driver pulled the vehicle over to the right shoulder of the highway.
The driver and three passengers, which included a 28-year-old female, a 59-year-old male and a 60-year-old female, managed to exit the vehicle. The driver attempted to rescue the infant, but was unable due to the vehicle becoming engulfed in flames.
California Highway Patrol officers and Orange County Fire Authority responded to the accident, with the first responders pronouncing the infant dead at the scene.
The driver suffered major injury while the other three passengers sustained moderate injuries, according to the highway patrol’s collision report.
The case remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
