Sammamish citizens hoping to put their green thumbs on display can now apply for one of 58 plots in the city’s brand-new community garden.
Applications are available starting today, April 1, online (www.ci.sammamish.wa.us) and at City Hall.
The deadline for application submission is April 26. If there are more applicants than plots, alottery will be employed on April 27 to determine the recipients. The city will charge $50 per year for use of the community garden plots.
“This has been on our to-do list for quite a while,” said City Manager Ben Yazici, in a release. “It’s going to be fun to scratch this off the list and watch people grow flowers and vegetables near City Hall.”
The garden, which is still under construction, is located in the northwest corner of the LowerCommons and has a projected opening date of May 6.
Most of the plots will be four feet by eightfeet. A half-dozen plots intended for people with disabilities will be a bit smaller at three feet byeight feet.
Residents who want to take a look at the garden are encouraged to attend the city’s Earth DayCelebration from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., April 20 in the Lower Commons. In addition to music, vendorsand other festivities, attendees will be able to see the location, scale and orientation of the garden.
The garden is located at 600 222nd Place S.E., right next to the small, Lower Commons parkinglot. To reach the parking lot from 228th Avenue, turn west on Southeast Fourth Street, and thensouth on 222nd Place Southeast.
