The City of Sammamish will hold a number of recycling, waste reduction, and hazardous waste collection programs in 2010.
The programs are a part of the city’s efforts to reduce the amount of waste going to landfills as well as to properly collect and dispose of household hazardous and moderate risk wastes.
In 2009, over 3,000 Sammamish residents participated in Sammamish recycling collection events and over 414,000 pounds of material was collected and recycled. This included 185,000 pounds of moderate risk wastes, like computer monitors, TV sets, motor oil, and lead acid batteries.
In 2010, compost bins will be sold at the spring recycling collection event, being planned for mid-April. This event will be a waste reduction and recycling event and compost bin sale. Planning for the event is taking place now and notification of the exact day, time, and service provided will be provided in advance by a mailed informational flyer and by a posting on the city’s website.
In the fall, the city will hold two recycling events. One is being planned for Eastlake High School and one for Sunny Hills Elementary School. Residents will receive an event notice to attend the event that is nearest to their home to even out event participation.
Look for notice of a visit from the Household Hazardous Wastemobile in early July. More information on the Wastemobile or the household hazardous waste collection site in Bellevue (Factoria) can be found by visiting www.lhwmp.org/home/.
Latex paint is no longer considered hazardous waste and the household hazardous waste facilities in King County (the Wastemobile and Factoria) no longer accept it. Residents, who cannot use up latex paint, please dry it out and put it in the garbage with the lid off. Visit the King County website for more information on how to dry out latex paint.
In the summer, the city will host the Sammamish business recycling collection event. This event is intended to help businesses recycle waste typically generated in the commercial sector. A notification of the exact day, time, and service provided will be provided in advance by a mailed informational flyer to City businesses and by a posting on the city’s website.
The continuing programs are sponsored by the City of Sammamish and made possible by grants from the state WA State Department of Ecology, King County Solid Waste Division, and the Local Hazardous Waste Management Program in King County. The city contracts with a regional firm, Olympic Environmental Resources, for implementation and management of the City recycling programs.
