Issaquah’s Village Theatre has announced its 2017-2018 season, running from Sept. 14, 2017 through July 1, 2018 and featuring “Into the Woods,” “Newsies,” “The Gin Game,” “String” and “Hairspray.”
“Into the Woods,” a fairy tale mash-up featuring the music of Stephen Sondheim, will play from Sept. 14 through Oct. 22 in Issaquah and Oct. 27 through Nov. 19 in Everett. Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Brian Yorkey will direct this story of what happens when Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Jack in the Beanstalk and other favorite fairy tale characters collide.
Disney’s “Newsies,” the high-spirited, Tony Award-winning musical about the Newsboys Strike of 1899, runs from Nov. 9 through Dec. 31 in Issaquah and Jan. 5 through Jan. 28 in Everett. The show uses a high-energy explosion of song and dance to tell the tale of a group of underdog newsies in New York City who become unlikely heroes when they stand up for what is right.
“The Gin Game,” a battle of quick wits and sharp tongues, plays from Jan. 18 through Feb. 25 in Issaquah and March 2 through March 25 in Everett. The tragicomedy features a pair of residents at a nursing home who engage in games of wit at the same time that they play Gin Rummy.
“String,” an all-new musical about fate and the fragile fabric of the universe, will have its world premiere at Village from March 15 through April 22 in Issaquah and from April 27 through May 20 in Everett. The musical follows three goddesses from ancient Greece who fall out of favor with Zeus and must live and work in the modern world.
Tony Award-winning smash hit “Hairspray” runs from May 10 through July 1 in Issaquah and from July 6 through July 29 in Everett. Ambitious teen Tracy Turnblad sets out to dance her way onto national TV, dethrone the reigning teen queen, win the affections of the local heartthrob and integrate a TV network … all without denting her ’do! The musical includes all of the fan favorites, such as “You Can’t Stop the Beat,” “Without Love,” “Welcome to the ’60s” and “Good Morning Baltimore.”
“We think this season is the perfect blend of being artistically challenging for our creative staff, while also maintaining a strong appeal for our audiences,” said Village Theatre Artistic Director Steve Tomkins, who is set to direct both “Newsies” and “Hairspray. We’re going to bring new energy into these shows and add that special ‘Village Theatre’ touch.”
Season subscriptions run from $122 to $300. For tickets, call the Issaquah box office at 425-392-2202 or log onto http://villagetheatre.org.
