9U Spartan baseball wins third straight tournament

The Spartan Baseball Club’s 9U Green team steamrolled its way through the competition over the weekend in the Summer Slam tournament in Tacoma outscoring five opponents 63-11 on their way to their third straight tournament championship.

The Spartan Baseball Club’s 9U Green team steamrolled its way through the competition over the weekend in the Summer Slam tournament in Tacoma outscoring five opponents 63-11 on their way to their third straight tournament championship.

The No. 2-seeded Spartans faced top-seeded Bellevue East in the championship game. The Spartans scored four runs in the top of the first inning and didn’t slow down, winning 18-3.

Josh Winchester led the Spartans, going 2-for-2 at the plate with a diving catch in the outfield. Starting pitcher Eddie Rosemont struck out five of the six batters he faced in two innings of pitching.

The Spartans, who won both pool play games on Saturday, defeated the Twin City Jays 10-2 in Sunday’s quarterfinals. Cal Jensen paved the way with a bases-loaded double.

In the semifinals, the Spartans defeated the Stods Raptors 10-2, led by Jake Beck who went 2-for-3 at the plate with several key plays on defense.
