The scenario was simple Tuesday afternoon: Win the final event, win the swim meet.
In a battle of Plateau rivals, it was Skyline who rose to the occasion, claiming the 400 freestyle relay and a 99-87 victory over Eastlake at Boehm Pool in Issaquah.
“It came down to that relay, it came down to the last event,” Spartan head coach Susan Simpkins said.
The group of David Jett, John Gerlach, Ashton Powell and Alex Palumbo finished in 3 minutes, 37.93 seconds — nearly 6 seconds faster than Eastlake (3:43.28).
Tuesday’s meet was as even as one could get, as the Spartans claimed six first-place finishes, and the Wolves did the same.
The difference for Skyline was two relay victories. They also won the 200 free in a time of 1:39 with Jett, Gerlach, Alex Carey and Mitch Kim.
“Our boys swam really well,” Simpkins said. “Both relays pushed through really good.”
Palumbo earned two individual victories in the 200 IM (2:07.90), and the 100 free (54.09). David Jett claimed a victory in the 500 free, while Corson Mitchel (1:02.31) narrowly reached the wall before Kuroshe Mahak (1:02.85) in the 100 backstroke.
Eastlake was led by senior Jay Bennett, who won the 50 freestyle (24.59) and 100 butterfly (1:00.03). He also helped the 200 medley relay of Kuroshe Mahak, Zach Alleva and Ryker Oldenburg, to a first-place finish in 1:48.62.
Henry O’Niel won the 200 free (2:03.56), Alleva won the 100 breaststroke (1:08.59) and Chase Stites won the diving competition with a score of 165.75.
Skyline improved to 4-2 in dual meets. The Spartans faced rival Issaquah Thursday, and don’t compete again until Jan. 26 against Liberty.
Eastlake dropped to 0-5 in dual meets.
The Wolves struggled early in the season, according to head coach Andy Hay, in large part to a series of unfortunate circumstances.
“We had two meets at the beginning of the season that I think we should have won and the reason that we didn’t win is that we had almost half our team ineligible,” he said.
Eastlake faces Garfield Friday, Jan. 15 in Seattle.
