Penner earns second in tourney
Kevin Penner, a junior at Eastlake High School, finished in second place at 2008 Pacific Northwest Junior PGA Championship this past weekend at Tumwater Valley Golf Course. Penner shot a two-day total of 65-70-135 for the par 144 course. Penner, and winner Gaston De La Torre of Brush Prairie, fired rounds of 65 on the Saturday. Penner had a bogey-free round on Sunday, and lost by two strokes to De La Torre. Third place was five strokes back of Penner.
Skyline hires new AD, coach
Skyline High School announced May 30 the hire of Kevin Rohrich as its new athletic director. Rohrich comes from Everett’s Cascade High School, where he was a boys basketball coach from 2002 to 2007. Rohrich will replace current athletic director Jeff Chandler, who is leaving after three years.
The Skyline girls basketball team also hired a new head coach. Greg Bruns, the head junior varsity coach at Redmond the last three years, will fill the spot vacated by Duane Ochs. Ochs stepped down after one season of coaching the Spartans to a 14-11 record and a trip to the Sea-King District playoffs.
Tigers win four games
The Issaquah 9- and 10-year-old Tiger softball team continues to roll through the Coast League, improving to 11-1 over the last week.
Issaquah edged the Eastlake Wildcats 10-7, on Monday with some timely hitting by Michelle Fowler, Michelle Gersuk, Sydney Schultz and Sienna Otley. Pitchers Sarah Jordan, Gersuk, Fowler and Madalyn Lyles combined for an impressive 17 strikeouts in six innings.
The Tigers also earned a win over the Eastlake Wildcats on May 29, beating them 11-4. Issaquah blanked the Sammamish Bandits 10-0 on May 28 and downed the Sammamish Heat 14-7 on May 24. Issaquah closes its regular season out tomorrow.
