Eastlake loses shootout with Garfield | Boys basketball

More than Eastlake's lead disappeared in a blink of an eye Tuesday night — so did the Wolves' hopes at a share of the KingCo Crest title.

More than Eastlake’s lead disappeared in a blink of an eye Tuesday night — so did the Wolves’ hopes at a share of the KingCo Crest title.

Following a hectic third quarter that saw seven lead changes, five ties, a combined 10 three-point baskets and a total of 62 points, Eastlake suddenly shut down.

Garfield, however, continued its offensive assault on its way to a 91-80 victory.

“We just had about a 6-minute stretch where we just weren’t very good tonight and it was for a variety of reasons,” Eastlake head coach Pat Bangasser said. “Alertness, focus and they’re quick. If you lose your concentration for just a split second, they’re going to make you pay.”

Tied 63-63 with 3 seconds left in the third quarter, Garfield’s Glenn Brooks drilled a three-pointer, giving the Bulldogs a 66-63 advantage headed into the fourth quarter. Garfield never surrendered its lead again.

A pair of back-to-back three-pointers from freshman Tucker Haymond early in the fourth increased the Bulldog’s lead to nine, 74-65. Haymond, who scored 14 points, had similar back-to-back three-pointers in the final minute of the third quarter.

“He was hotter than a pistol, he shot well,” Bangasser said.

Six turnovers in the fourth quarter resulted in several easy Garfield buckets, including a steal and layup by Chris Michael Garrett that gave the Bulldogs a double-digit lead with 3:58 to go.

“There was a 5- or 6-minute period of the game where we just kind of had just a mental lapse,” Eastlake senior Kyle Hansen said.

Eastlake led most of the first half, benefiting largely from its full-court press and the play of Hansen.

The Wolves forced the Bulldogs into five first-quarter turnovers, jumping out to a 19-15 lead after one quarter. They held the advantage all the way through the second quarter, taking a 34-33 lead to the locker room.

Hansen, who had a previous season-high of six points, erupted for a career-best 22.

“I was just in the right place at the right time,”the 6-foot-6 senior said. “There was just some amazing passes from multiple people.”

The league’s leading scorer Michael Russo (20.8 ppg) also scored 22 points for the Wolves, while senior Dillon Pericin added 13.

The Bulldogs, who benefited from 12 offensive rebounds — most of which they scored on — were led by Brooks’ 25 points. Des’Juan Newton added 24.

Eastlake dropped to 10-5 in league, and currently has the third best record in the KingCo 4A. Garfield improved to 12-3 and is tied with Skyline for the best record in the league.

Eastlake closes the regular-season out at 8 p.m., Friday at home against rival Redmond. The Wolves, who finished 3-17 last year, have already locked up a playoff spot. A victory Friday would give them the third best overall record in the KingCo 4A, but according to Bangasser, they will likely receive a fifth seed. He said the top two teams in the KingCo Crown will receive the No. 2 and No. 4 seeds, while the top two in the KingCo Crest will receive the No. 1 and No. 3 spots.

Positioning is important for home-court advantage, but the Wolves aren’t putting too much stock in it.

“There’s always an upset, there’s always someone who gets knocked off who’s a favorite, you never know,” Bangasser said.

Prep downs Eastside Catholic

Eastside Catholic stayed with Seattle Prep through two quarters Tuesday night, but a difficult third quarter led to a 53-32 loss.

The Crusaders trailed 17-11 at halftime, but a 25-10 run by the Panthers in the third put the game away.
