It wasn’t until the 73rd minute of Tuesday night’s KingCo 4A battle with Redmond, however, the Wolves were finally able to punch one in, helping them earn a 1-1 tie.

“At the end of the day, I don’t know if it’s a fair result, but it’s a result,” head coach Adam Gervis said. “We didn’t lose.”

Playing up, junior defender Gerard Galvin took the ball at the Mustang 30-yard line, pushed it forward 10 yards and drilled a shot to the bottom left corner of the net past goalkeeper Tyler Albin.

“One thing I stressed is shooting from way out, and that paid off,” Gervis said.

Eastlake out-shot Redmond 19-9 over two 40-minute halves and two 5-minute overtimes, but simply couldn’t place the ball in the back of the net. Several shots were just inches outside the post, and a handful were stopped impressively by Albin.

The Mustangs took the initial lead in the 26th minute when Shawn Cooley took a throw-in on the right side of the Eastlake goalbox. He skidded a pass across the ground to Max Luartes, who abruptly booted it into the back of the net.

That was the only shot that got by the goalkeeping duo of Devon DeAlteriis and Zack Wile. The pair played the first and second halves, respectively. They combined for four big saves, including a one-on-one stop from Wile in the first overtime.

Eastlake moved to 1-1-2 in league and 2-1-3 overall.

With 14 underclassmen on this year’s team, Gervis knows it could take some time, but he’s pleased with the start.

“They’re great kids, they work hard — all the pieces that you need in a good team,” he said. “The only problem is we only have three who return from last year. I think with this group, it’s baby steps all the way. We’ll get there.”

Skyline downs nationally-ranked Gig Harbor

Skyline defeated non-league Gig Harbor 3-1 Tuesday night.

The Tide was ranked 47th in the nation last week, but the Spartans dominated from the get-go.

Giancarlo Santoro put Skyline on the board first scoring in the 11th minute on an assist from Tim Kountz. Travis Strawn scored on a penalty kick in the 56th minute and Braxton Griffin added an unassisted goal in the 63rd minute. Gig Harbor finally got on the board in the 72nd minute on a penalty-kick goal from Conor Lawson.

Skyline improved to 5-2-1 overall with the victory. They host rival Issaquah next, at 7:30 p.m., Friday.
