The state wrestling championships begin Friday in the Tacoma Dome with first round action, and continue thru Saturday evening with the state title matches.
Skyline, Issaquah and Eastside Catholic all have a host of wrestlers in the field, and legitimate state title contenders including defending 3A champion Matt Iwicki for the Crusaders.
Last year’s 3A state title winner at 120 pounds, Iwicki begins this year’s Mat Classic against Lincoln senior Robert Mathews in the 132 pound bracket at 11:00 a.m.
EC junior Connor Heger faces Southridge senior Marcus Surita in the first round at 220 pounds in a 1:20 p.m. match, while Alex Neale tries to punch a quarterfinal ticket at 1:30 p.m. against Hanford senior Dallon Grinder at 285 pounds.
Skyline freshman Zach Froeber starts at 10:10 a.m. against Sidat Kanyi of Edmonds-Woodway in the 106 pound bracket.
At 113, Skyline junior Nathan Swanson faces Cascade’s David Garcia at 10:40 a.m. Teammate Tristan Steciw meets Todd Link of Tahoma at 11:00 in the 132 pound bracket.
Senior Joseph DeMatteo meets Dalton Myers at 11:30 at 145 pounds and sophomore Bo Longmore faces Kamiak senior Tyler Webley at 12:30 p.m. in the 170 pound bracket. Freshman Addie Mejia made the state girls bracket at 118 pounds for Skyline, and faces Daisy Chavez of Sunnyside at 10:48 a.m. for a quarterfinal berth.
Issaquah senior Torre Eaton begins at 10:10 against Thomas Munoz, a sophomore from Yelm, in the 113 pound bracket.
Issaquah senior Louden Ivey faces Central Valley junior Blake Beard in an 11:20 first round match at 138 pounds.
Junior Hunter Hurley faces Bethel’s Logan Bearss in a first round match at noon at 152 pounds and Colby Starren tries to reach the quarterfinals against Lewis & Clark senior Tyler Taylor at 12:20 at 160.
Eastlake freshman Martin Miller meets Arlington’s Jeremy Nygard at 10:00 a.m. for a spot in the afternoon’s quarterfinal round.
