The Woodinville Falcons girls basketball team had a 15-point lead at halftime against the Issaquah Eagles.
With 7:50 left in regulation, the Eagles had cut the Falcons lead 46-40 on Amanda Ferguson driving lay-up. Issaquah had all the momentum but Woodinville wouldn’t relinquish the lead at any juncture of the contest. The Falcons then went on a 11-0 run, extending their lead to 57-40 with 3:18 left in the game and cruised in the final minutes of regulation to a 61-43 victory against the Eagles on Dec. 12.
Issaquah sharpshooters Lucy Stewart, who scored a team-high 15 points, and Mariah VanHalm (nine points scored) fueled Issaquah’s comeback bid late in the third quarter and early in the fourth quarter. Woodinville head coach Scott Bullock was glad his team was able to weather the storm and come out with the victory.
“Lucy (Stewart) and Mariah (VanHalm) both made some deep threes (3-pointers). They cut the lead to six and then we went on a 11-0 run. I was proud of how we kept our poise and showed confidence,” Bullock said.
The Falcons shot just 3-for-26 from beyond the arc but dominated play in the paint. Post player Madison Lundquist scored a game-high 18 points and forward Gabby Whalen added 15 points in the win.
“Madison was in foul trouble in the first half and only had two points but she had 16 points in the second half. Most of them were put-backs or little 5-footers and 10-footers. She kind of saved us today,” Bullock said.
Issaquah head coach Jackie Bykonen said her team gave maximum effort but struggled in the paint against Woodinville.
“We played hard and we played all the way to the buzzer. We just need to continue to work on the things that are haunting us. Offensive rebounds hurt us,” Bykonen said. “We just can’t have those little letdowns.”
