Issaquah’s doubles team of Sam Garrard and Sabrina Norton placed eighth at the 4A state tennis championships Saturday in Vancouver.
The pair dropped their opening-round match Friday, falling 6-1, 6-3 to Tahoma’s Sierra Southworth and Maddie Turek. They battled back through the losers bracket to defeat Todd Beamer’s Jenny Hoefel and Kiele Bowman 6-0, 6-0 and Kamiak’s Alyssa Gilbert and Jenna Gilbert 7-5, 7-5.
With a chance to place as high as fifth, the Eagle duo fell 6-2, 6-2 to Walla Walla’s Tiana Cummings and Claire Konen.
Eastlake’s Vicente Varas, who won the KingCo 4A singles championship, failed to place. He defeated Todd Beamer’s Joseph de la Cruz 6-0, 6-4 in the first round. Varas then dropped two straight, falling 6-0, 6-3 to Puyallup’s Brian Pinkard and 6-0, 6-1 to Wenatchee’s Clint Vidano.
Skyline’s Aman Manji, the KingCo 4A runner-up, also came up short of placing at state. He lost his first match 7-6, 6-2 to Skyview’s Kent Andreasen, then defeated Auburn Riverside’s Jarad Schraeder 6-2, 6-2 before falling 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 to Bellarmine Prep’s Alex Vogt.
