Maddey Pflaumer winced as the ball spun around the rim, kicked off the backboard and bounced a couple of more times on the foot of the basket before falling through the hoop.
Her free throw with sixth-tenths of a second left, coupled with one more, gave the Eagles a dramatic 51-49 first-round victory over Lewis & Clark March 3 play-off game Wednesday morning at the 4A state tournament opening round in Tacoma.
“It looked off,” Pflaumer said. “I was just saying ‘Please God, let it go in.”
Issaquah trailed Lewis & Clark of Spokane 49-41 with 3:41 left in the game before going on a 10-0 run to seal the victory.
Blaire Brady’s three-pointer with 1:50 left, pulled the Eagles to within two, 49-47, before the lone senior on the team, Domi Mendezona stole the ball and tied the game on a layup with 33 seconds left.
Issaquah forced a miss on the next Tiger possession. With 10 seconds left and no timeouts, the Eagles drove the ball down the court. Mackenzie Schiltz missed a long two, but Pflaumer pulled down a rebound and and was fouled on a shot attempt with under a second remaining.
“We have heart,” Pflaumer said. “We dig when we don’t think we have anything left. Yeah, we’re kind of an underdog but we just came out and showed what we were made of.”
The first half was sloppy for both teams as they combined for 27 turnovers. Lewis & Clark had 16 of those miscues but still managaed a 21-20 halftime lead.
Both teams adjusted in the second half with Issaquah coming up big from the free throw line. The Eagles, who were out-rebounded 44-26, hit 14 of 16 free-throw attempts lifting them to the win.
Mendezona led Issaquah with 15 points and four assists. Blaire Brady had 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds, while Pflaumer ended with eight points and five rebounds.
Issaquah advanced to a quarterfinal matchup with Lake Stevens on Thursday. The winner of that game plays Friday at 7 p.m. in a semifinal matchup.
