It was a tough tournament start, but Lakeside Recovery battled back to make tonight’s American Legion AAA Northwest Regional Championship in Medford, Ore.
The group of current and former Newport, Issaquah and Skyline high school baseball players lost their tournament opener Aug. 6, falling 7-6 to Charter Cove, Calif. They held a 6-1 lead, before surrendering four runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth.
Lakeside pulled a comeback of its own the following day, beating Lewiston, Idaho 12-11. They trailed 6-1 after three innings, before rallying for 11 runs — three in the fourth, four in the sixth and four in the seventh.
Lakeside followed Saturday with a dominating 12-2 win over Anchorage, Alaska, and a 4-2 victory on Sunday over Billings, Mont.
Lakeside needed to defeat the host team, Medford, twice on Monday to claim the regional championship and earn a trip to the American Legion World Series, which begins this Friday, Aug. 14, in Fargo, N.D.
Medford went 4-0 through its first four games. The two teams didn’t meet in the regional tournament prior to Monday, but played once in the regular season. On July 2, Medford beat Lakeside 31-22, in a game that featured 46 hits. The two teams play at 4 p.m., today, and around 7 p.m. if a second game is necessary.
