Baseball Eastside shuts down Newport Eastside Catholic won its first game of the 2009 season Monday, beating Newport 3-0 at the University of Washington Ballpark. Matt Boyd pitched six innings, striking out seven and allowing just two hits. Sam Lindquist struck out three in the seventh to earn the save. Jake Gober was 1-for-2 with an RBI for the Crusaders.

Eagles come from behind

Issaquah fell behind 2-0 to Kentridge in its season-opener last Friday, but battled back for a 6-2 victory. The Eagles scored four runs in the seventh inning. Devin O’Donnell, Miles Perkins, Spencer Rogers and Dustin Talley all had RBI hits for Issaquah.

Eagles off to hot start

Issaquah started its season with two non-league wins, beating Mount Si, 1-0, Saturday and West Seattle, 3-0, on Monday. Larry Schneider scored the Eagles’ lone goal Saturday in the 6th minute. Quinn Grisham, Michael Axelson and Schneider all had goals Monday. Issaquah won just three games last year.

EC blasts Cleveland

Eastside Catholic defeated Cleveland 8-0 Tuesday night behind the four goals of Spencer Spears. Casey Martin, Bryce Basic, Juan Santos and Anthony Anastasi all added goals for the Crusaders.

Anastasi and Garrett DeCillia combined for the shutout. EC travels to face Issaquah at 7:30 p.m., Saturday.

Spartans fall to Islanders

Skyline lost 4-1 to Mercer Island Monday in its season-opener. Evan Kamber scored the go-ahead goal for the Spartans in the 8th minute, but the Islanders rallied for four unanswered goals — three of which came in the second half.

Skyline fell 10-0 to Kentwood Monday night in its season-opener. Kayla Evans led the Conquerors with three RBI hits.
