Issaquah downs rival Newport

Issaquah, which finished second to Newport the last two years at the state gymnastics meet, got over the hump Jan. 21, beating the Knights and four other teams at Eastside Gymnastics. The Eagles finished with 172.1 points, ahead of Newport’s 171.1. Liberty (148.25), Garfield (137.15), Eastlake (130.2) and Holy Names (33.25) rounded out the field.

The Eagles were led by Olivia Goree (36.55) and Risa Fukada (35.3), who took first and second, respectively, in all-around. Goree was first in bars (8.8), beam (9.5), floor (9.45) and vault (8.8). Fukada finished second on the bars (8.3) and third on the floor (9.2).

Girls basketball

Eagles nab top KingCo spot

Issaquah won two key league contests, beating Redmond 57-50 Friday and Eastlake 48-35 on Saturday. The victories boosted the Eagles into sole possession of first place in the KingCo Crest with a 8-1 league and 10-3 overall record.

Issaquah trailed Redmond by nine points in the first quarter of Friday’s game, but exploded for 22 fourth-quarter points to take the win. Alexa Smith and Erin Nicol combined for 40 points, scoring 22 and 18 respectively. Nicol scored 19 to lead all scorers in Saturday’s win.

Wolves split weekend games

Eastlake got revenge from an early-season loss Friday, beating Newport 54-47. The Wolves followed Saturday with a 48-35 loss to Issaquah, leaving them in second place in the KingCo Crest at 7-3 in league and 9-4 overall.

Eastlake was led Friday by Ellie Martinez’s 15 points. Alyssa Charlston scored 12 and Jena Boyle had 11.

The Wolves struggled early against Issaquah, trailing 25-9 at halftime of Saturday’s game. Martinez led Eastlake with 11 points.

Bulldogs topple Spartans

Lindsey’s Perry’s game-high 18 points weren’t enough for Skyline Friday, as the Spartans fell 52-40 to Garfield on the road.

The Bulldogs outscored Skyline in every quarter on their way to the league victory.

The Spartans fell to 6-4 in league and 8-5 overall with the loss.

Wrestling

Issaquah grapplers face top teams

Issaquah squared off with some of the best 4A teams in the state over the weekend, losing three matchups at Spokane’s Dream Duals.

The Eagles lost handily to Moses Lake (58-15) and Mead (61-12) and came up just shy to Snohomish (45-32). Dalton Baunsgard, Jon White and Jacob Borin earned two wins apiece. Tyler Volk, Ty Morton, Jordan Tanner, Ben Tickman and Kyle Bichich also earned victories.
