Skyline boys win District 2/4 track & field championship

Behind six titles, the Skyline boys track and field team ran away with the District 2/4 team championship Saturday at Seattle's Southwest Athletic Complex.

Behind six titles, the Skyline boys track and field team ran away with the District 2/4 team championship Saturday at Seattle’s Southwest Athletic Complex.

The Spartans earned 101 team points, finishing ahead of 16 other teams from KingCo and the Greater St. Helens League. Skyview of Vancouver was second with 76 points.

Junior Kasen Williams captured three of Skyline’s titles. The defending 4A state high jump champion won the event with a leap of 6-feet, 6 inches. He also won the triple jump by over 4 feet with a leap of 47-5 3/4, and the long jump in 23-6 1/2.

The Spartans also earned two titles from senior sprinter Alex Lee. He blazed to a first-place finish in the 100 meters in 11.15 seconds and the 200 meters in 22.39 — winning by three-hundreths and two-hundreths of a second, respectively.

The 400 relay team of Lee, freshman Blake Young and seniors Joey Kettle and Dustin Bratten also won a district championship in 42.61 seconds. They edged Inglemoor (42.64) by three-hundreths of a second.

Skyline junior Kyle Branch also earned a top-three finish and a spot in the state meet, taking third in the 3,200. His lean to the line netted him a time of 9:39.36 as he narrowly edged out Garfield’s Chris Wozniak (9:39.93).

The Spartan 1,600 relay of Lee, sophomore Drew Matthews, Bratten and Williams finished in second place in a time of 3:21.90. Skyview won the event in 3:21.39.

Eastlake also had an impressive performance over the weekend, placing third overall as a team with 61 team points.

The Wolves advanced four individuals and one relay on to this week’s 4A state meet. Three of Eastlake’s state-bound athletes won district titles. Senior Brandon Cole finished first in the 400 meters in 49.47 seconds; senior Paul Kupcis won the 800 meters in 1:55 and Jeff Sloat won the 300 meter hurdles in 38.66 seconds.

Fellow senior W. Devin Bennett qualified in the long jump and triple jump, finishing second behind Kasen Williams in both events. He cleared 43-5 1/4 in the triple jump and 21-4 in the long jump.

Eastlake’s 1,600 relay of Curtis McCarson, Daniel Jackstadt, Kupcis and Cole finished third in a time of 3:23.25 to lock up another spot at the state meet.

Issaquah finished eighth as a team, tying Heritage with 41 points. The Eagles were led by senior Chris Brasino’s second-place finish in the 3,200. His time of 9:37.38 was only seven-hundreths of a second behind Redmond’s Mack Young (9:37.31). Senior Josh Martyn placed third in the 300 hurdles in a time of 40.49 and junior Michael Baba was third in the javelin with a heave of 170 feet even.

The 4A state meet begins Thursday, May 27 at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma and runs through Saturday, May 29.
